US food and Drug Administration or FDA made an announcement about Jamba Juice from San Francisco, CA was informing the general public that the smoothies with strawberries which were sold at its Jamba Juice Stores in Arizona, Southern Nevada and Southern California, from November 25 to December 1, 2006, might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenesis is an organism which may cause severe and sometimes fatal infections among young children, the weak and elderly persons, and others with weak immune systems. Healthy people may only experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infections may lead to miscarriage and stillbirths among the pregnant women.

Jamba Juice was initially notified of the contaminated strawberry when one of its supliers, Cleugh’s Frozen Foods of Salinas CA, informed the company that frozen strawberries from one of Cleugh’s plants tested and was positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Jamba Juice right away and voluntarily stopped all shipments from the location where Listeria was found, and removed all strawberries from the production plant, as well as the berries not believed to be affected. All the stores that received the shipments from the supplier’s infected locations were cleaned and disinfected.
