The California Highway Patrol released details of a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 880 in the Oakland area on Wednesday, July 29, as reported in the San Jose Mercury News.

Chain-reaction Wreck

At approximately 4:50 a.m., a southbound 2001 Hyundai Sonata stalled in the center lane. A 38-year-old female motorist approaching in a 2000 Honda Civic hit her brakes to avoid hitting the Sonata. The Civic then swerved into an adjacent lane, where it collided with a 2010 Subaru Forester SUV. This collision sent the Civic into a 2005 GMC Sierra pickup truck. Officers dispatched to the scene arrived to find both the Honda and the Subaru on fire.

Injury and Loss of Life Reported

The driver of the Honda Civic did not survive the crash. Emergency personnel took the 52-year-old male driver of the Subaru Forester to Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro for treatment of minor injuries. Authorities reported that each person involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt.

All southbound lanes of I-880 remained closed for over two hours in the aftermath of the fatal wreck.
