Most of the rights and responsibilities of motor vehicle drivers under the California Vehicle Code may also apply to bicyclists.
If you are a bicyclist moving at the same speed and direction as the traffic, you may occupy any lane.
If you are moving slower than the traffic, you must use the lane closest to the right. You are allowed to take lanes closer to the left when:
• You are preparing for a left turn
• You are avoiding hazards
• The rightmost lane is dedicated for vehicles preparing for a right turn
• The lane is too narrow
• The right side of the road is under construction
If you are moving slower than the traffic on roads with established bicycle lanes, you must take the bicycle lane. Exceptions can be made if:
• You are overtaking a vehicle, another bicycle, or pedestrian on the same lane or about to come into the lane when overtaking is unsafe to do on the bicycle lane.
• You are getting ready for a left turn
• You are avoiding hazards
• You are approaching a place where a right turn is authorized
Bicycles are not authorized to pass freeways, express ways and toll bridges at all times unless permitted by the California Department of Transportation.
