When you’re in a truck accident, you may not always be conscious of what’s going on afterwards. This is because you’re suffering from what’s known as a concussion. What exactly is a concussion and what can you do about it? A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. It can be caused by a vehicular accident but it’s also caused by playing high impact sports such as football. It can be caused by falling down and hitting your head etc.
Symptoms of Concussion
Often, you may feel like you are fine after a truck accident but you might actually be suffering from concussion. The symptoms of concussion include confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, irritability etc. If you suspect that the concussion has occurred to someone other than yourself, you can look for these signs but you can also look for different-sized pupils, slurred speech and draining of a clear fluid from the ears and the nose.
Milder and More Serious Concussions
Not all concussions are that serious. Sometimes, when you have a concussion, the doctors will just tell you to rest and avoid activities where coordination is needed, such as driving. For pain, they may also tell you to get over-the-counter medication such as Advil or Tylenol.
But there are other concussions which are more serious in nature. For example, there are certain concussions which are accompanied by spinal injuries in which case the person should be moved as little as possible before medical help arrives. Some very serious concussions in which there is bleeding or swelling in the brain might require surgery.
Diagnosing and Treating a Concussion
Your doctor will decide what course of treatment is needed by doing a physical exam and following it up with an MRI or CT scan. If you have seizures, the doctor might do an electroencephalogram. Once the severity of the concussion is determined, the doctor will prescribe a course of action.
