Aggressive driving can be intimidating and threatening to other drivers. It is often associated with heavy traffic but can also be experienced in lower volume traffic.
What is Considered “Aggressive Driving”?
Flashing high beams while tailgating is one way that aggressive drivers try to communicate to the driver in front of them to get out of the way or to increase speed.
Tailgating is a common form of aggressive driving. The driver follows the car in front of them at an unsafe distance. This is often intimidating to the driver in front.
Weaving in and out of traffic is frightening for those who witness it. One unpredictable move by a driver that does not see them can spell disaster.
Driving too slow can sometimes be aggressive. Slowing down to retaliate against another driver who is driving aggressively towards them can be considered just as aggressive as tailgating. Some drivers who are being tailgated will slow down in order to punish the tailgater. This behavior may only anger the tailgater and lead to more dangerous behavior.
Honking the horn is another way a driver can show aggression. Some drivers will use their horn as a means of yelling at other drivers. At times, this honking is accompanied by rude hand gestures.
Avoid Dangerous Situations
Aggressive driving is unpredictable and can turn into road rage. Engaging with aggressive drivers is usually not helpful. Responding in kind to the behavior of aggressive drivers could escalate the situation into a much more dangerous one.
It may be frustrating to experience aggressive driving and it might be tempting to let the aggressive driver know that their behavior is offensive, rude, and unacceptable. It may also be tempting to let them know that you are not going to take it.
Stay alert while driving. Avoid distractions. Notice what other vehicles are doing.
Don’t engage with other drivers who are driving in an unsafe manner. If an aggressive driver tries to engage with you, try to safely take down their license plate number and vehicle and driver description. Don’t engage.
