According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), thirteen percent of fatal vehicle crashes involve motorcycles.
The NHTSA also states that approximately 80,000 riders sustain accident related injuries every year. Some of the more common ones are:
Head Injuries – Riders are more likely to suffer a head injury such as a concussion or brain damage in a motorcycle crash than any other type of injury. This is why it’s very important that all riders wear a helmet that fits properly. It can reduce the risk of dying from a head injury by thirty-seven percent.
Road Rash – This occurs when a rider’s body slides along the ground causing skin and muscle damage. It’s often very painful, and it can also cause disfigurement and infections that are life-threatening.
Biker’s Arm – When riders are thrown from their bike, they usually bring their arms in front of their chest in hopes of lessening the impact. However, this increases the risk of permanent nerve damage to both the arms and upper body.
Leg and Foot Injuries – These include severe cuts, sprained or strained ankles, or broken bones. Lowside falls can result in riders’ legs and feet getting stuck underneath their motorcycle, which means these body parts could sustain serious trauma resulting in long-term or permanent complications.
Back Injuries – Back injuries can be incredibly painful and they’re not always diagnosed right away. They include pulled muscles, strained discs, and nerve damage.
