How to Recover from the Trauma of a Car Accident

Recover from Trauma of a Car Accident

When you’re in a car accident, you emerge with both, physical and mental trauma. Sometimes, the physical wounds might be very slight but the mental wounds take a long time to heal.

People can experience PTSD-type symptoms for months after a car accident. You’ll be doing something innocuous like taking a shower and the car accident will suddenly replay in your head, leaving you feeling shaken.

Don’t worry if this happens to you. It’s actually quite normal. When people have a brush with death, they do naturally feel disturbed. Here are a few ways to get over the trauma:

Get Help

Go to a therapist if you can and talk about your feelings. Do you feel afraid when driving? Do you feel afraid even if someone else is driving? Do you hesitate before getting on a bus? Are your feelings getting in the way of performing everyday activities? Do you suddenly find yourself panicking or feeling short of breath? Do you feel depressed?

Talking about how you feel can help you feel lighter. Your therapist might also have some tips or techniques for you to use when you start panicking. If you can’t afford a therapist, you can try to look up support groups for car accident survivors.

Meditation/Yoga

If you don’t want to talk about your feelings to perfect strangers, you can try meditation or yoga. Meditation is generally calming for the mind. And there are many methods of meditation for you to choose from. There are also guiding meditations on the internet which will make you feel calmer right away.

Yoga is great for your body as well as your mind. By moving your body into various postures and focusing on doing them well, you are emptying your mind of all other thought, which is also the aim of meditation.
