If you plan on becoming a commercial truck driver in California, then there are specific requirements that you need to know and have. These requirements need to be met before you can drive a commercial truck and start your career.

Generally, no formal education is needed to become a commercial truck driver. But you do need to have a high school diploma or a GED. While a commercial truck training course is not required, it can be really helpful for you.

You also need to have a good and clean driving record. As a commercial truck driver, you are expected to haul freights and transport materials safely and responsibly. If you have tickets and convictions previously, then it will be hard for commercial truck companies to trust you.

You will also need a California commercial driver’s license (CDL), which has its own set of requirements. To apply for a CDL, you need:

• To be 18 years old for intrastate driving or 21 years old for interstate driving
• To show proof of your full name (via a birth certificate, a US passport, or other documents)
• To show proof of California residency
• To show proof of your Social Security Number
• To submit a medical certificate
• To pass a vision and written exam
• To have your photo taken and provide your thumbprint
• To pay the appropriate fees

To get your full CDL, you will also need to pass the skills and driving test. In this process, you will need to bring a vehicle that is the same class as the CDL you are applying for and it must pass the inspection. You will then have 3 attempts to pass the skills and driving test.

Be also prepared to pass periodic drug tests.

Once you have completed all these requirements, then you’re one step closer to having the commercial truck driving career that you want.
