Motorcycle Accidents Can Cause a Fractured Fibula

Motorcycle riders often find there is nothing better than cruising around town on a bright, sunny day.

Unfortunately, not all journeys end successfully as motorcycle accidents can and do happen.

They result in a variety of injuries including a fractured fibula.

What is a Fractured Fibula?

The fibula is the thin, large bone found in the lower leg on the outside of the calf. Because of its thinness, it is prone to fracturing when struck along the side. Such fractures can happen in the upper part of the fibula, on the fibula’s shaft, near the knee, or near the ankle.

Treatment

The treatment depends on the fracture’s severity, amount of displacement, and if the ankle, knee, or tibia bones were also fractured. For a less severe injury, victims usually wear a cast for immobilization and physical therapy may be prescribed during the healing process. A severe fracture may require surgery to attach a plate and screws to the bone.
