What is a Fractured Fibula?
The fibula is the thin, large bone found in the lower leg on the outside of the calf. Because of its thinness, it is prone to fracturing when struck along the side. Such fractures can happen in the upper part of the fibula, on the fibula’s shaft, near the knee, or near the ankle.
Symptoms
Victims may suffer from one or more of the following symptoms:
- Pain that ranges from moderate to severe
- Bruising or bleeding of the calf (bleeding can cause an infection where the fibula is broken)
- Calf tenderness
- Difficulty bearing weight
- Ankle or knee pain
- Numbness in the lower leg or feet
- Inflammation or swelling
Treatment
The treatment depends on the fracture’s severity, amount of displacement, and if the ankle, knee, or tibia bones were also fractured. For a less severe injury, victims usually wear a cast for immobilization and physical therapy may be prescribed during the healing process. A severe fracture may require surgery to attach a plate and screws to the bone.
